How to Install Emby on Your Synology NAS

Emby is a media server designed to organize, play, and stream audio and video to a variety of devices. Although Plex and Jellyfin might be two of the most well-known media servers, there is a third one that has started to gain popularity. Emby is the new kid on the block. In this step by step guide I will show you how to install Emby on your Synology NAS using Docker.

Install Docker via Synology “Package Center”.

Go to File Station and open the docker folder. Inside the docker folder, create a new folder and name it emby. Follow the instructions in the image below. Note: Be careful enter only lowercase, not uppercase letters.

Now create 3 new folders inside the emby folder that you created at STEP 3. Name them as follows: Movies, Music, TVShows. Follow the instructions in the image below. Note: If you already have Shared Folders for your media files in File Station, skip this STEP.

Open the Docker Package. From the Docker Console, go to Registry and search emby. Look for emby/embyserver and select it, then click Download or double click on it. You will be prompted to Choose Tag, select latest. Follow the instructions in the image below.

After you click “Select”, the download process of the Emby docker container will start. You can click on Image on the Docker Console to see the download progress. The current container is about 286 MB. Follow the instructions in the image below.

After the download is completed from the Docker Console, go to Image, then select the emby/embyserver:latest container. Click launch. After you click launch, a new window will open. Click Advanced Settings. Follow the instructions in the image below.

After you click Advanced Settings on STEP 7 a new window will open. From the Advanced Settings tab select Enable auto-restart. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Next tab – “Volume“. Select Add Folder. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Choose the emby folder then click Select. Follow the instructions in the image below.

After you click Select, type /config inside Mount path for the emby folder. Follow the instructions in the image below. Your Volume will look like this:

Do the same operation again for all the other folders inside the emby folder.

For the TVshows folder type in /tvshow in Mount path
For the Music folder type in /music in Mount path
For the Movies folder type in /movies in Mount path

Note: If you have existing Shared Folders for your TVshows, Music and Videos, remember to select those and add the correct Mount path rules like in the screenshot below. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Next tab – “Network“ move forward without doing anything (no action needed).
Next tab – “Port Settings“ on the Local Port area select 8096 and 8920 instead of Auto. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Next tab – “Environment“ add your own PUID and PGID values then click Apply.

After clicking “Apply“ on STEP 14, the screen below will open. Click “Next“. Follow the instructions in the image below.

After clicking “Next“, the screen below will open. Select “Run this container after the wizard is finished” then click “Apply“. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Go back to STEP 1 or you will deal with karma 🙂

  • STEP 19

Now open your browser and type in http://Synology-ip-address:8096
Select your Preferred display language then click Next. Follow the instructions in the image below.

After you click Next on STEP 19, you will be prompted to Create a new emby user account. Click Next. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Click the + New Library tab. Follow the instructions in the image below.

For Movies select Movies then your /movies folder. For Music select Music then your music folder etc. Click Ok.

Click Next. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Select the Language then Country for Preferred Metadata Language then click Next. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Disable “Automatic port mapping” then click Next. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Accept Emby Terms of Service then click Next. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Click Finish. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Click on the user you have previously created at STEP 20. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Click Remember me then Sign in. Follow the instructions in the image below.
