Jellyfin is a free Software Media System that puts you in control of managing and streaming your media. It is an alternative to the proprietary Emby and Plex, to provide media from a dedicated server to end-user devices via multiple apps. Jellyfin is the volunteer-built media solution that puts you in control of your media. Stream to any device from your own server, with no strings attached. There are no premium licenses or features, and no hidden agendas; just a team who wants to build something better and work together to achieve it. Hardware transcoding makes media streaming from your NAS faster and more efficient. In this step by step guide I will show you how to install Jellyfin with Hardware Transcoding on your Synology NAS using Docker & Portainer.

STEP 2
Install Portainer using my step by step guide. If you already have Portainer installed on your Synology NAS, skip this STEP. Attention: Make sure you have installed the latest Portainer version.
STEP 3
Use the link below to check if your Synology NAS model supports Hardware Transcoding. If you don’t find your model in the list below, then it means your NAS does not support Hardware Transcoding. In this case, you can Install Jellyfin on your Synology NAS without Hardware Transcoding.
STEP 4
Make sure you have a synology.me Wildcard Certificate. Follow my guide to get a Wildcard Certificate. If you already have a synology.me Wildcard certificate, skip this STEP.
STEP 5
Go to Control Panel / Login Portal / Advanced Tab / click Reverse Proxy. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 6
Now click the “Create” button. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 7
After you click the Create button, the window below will open. Follow the instructions in the image below.
On the General area, set the Reverse Proxy Name description: type in Jellyfin HT. After that, add the following instructions:
Source:
Protocol: HTTPS
Hostname: jellyfinht.yourname.synology.me
Port: 443
Check Enable HSTS
Destination:
Protocol: HTTP
Hostname: localhost
Port: 8096
STEP 8
On the Reverse Proxy Rules click the Custom Header tab. Click Create and then, from the drop-down menu, click WebSocket. After you click on WebSocket, two Header Names and two Values will be automatically added. Click Save. Follow the instructions in the image below.
