My previous guide for MeTube involved the use of Task Scheduler. Today I’m offering a recommended and excellent alternative for installing the latest MeTube version via Portainer. MeTube is a Web GUI for youtube-dl (using the yt-dlp fork) with playlist support. It allows you to download videos from YouTube and over 1770 other sites. You can download every video from the Internet in a couple of minutes directly onto your Synology NAS. In this step by step guide I will show you how to install MeTube on your Synology NAS using Docker & Portainer.
Install Portainer using my step by step guide. If you already have Portainer installed on your Synology NAS, skip this STEP. Attention: Make sure you have installed the latest Portainer version.
Go to File Station and open the docker folder. Inside the docker folder, create one new folder and name it metube. Follow the instructions in the image below.
Note: Be careful to enter only lowercase, not uppercase letters.
Log into Portainer using your username and password. On the left sidebar in Portainer, click on Stacks then + Add stack. Follow the instructions in the image below.
In the Name field type in metube. Follow the instructions in the image below.
version: "3.9" services: metube: container_name: MeTube image: ghcr.io/alexta69/metube healthcheck: test: curl -f http://localhost:8081/ || exit 1 mem_limit: 6g cpu_shares: 768 security_opt: - no-new-privileges:true restart: on-failure:5 ports: - 5992:8081 volumes: - /volume1/docker/metube:/downloads:rw environment: UID: 1026 GID: 100
Note: Before you paste the code above in the Web editor area below, change the value numbers for UID and GID with your own values. (Follow my step by step guide on how to do this.
Scroll down on the page until you see a button named Deploy the stack. Click on it. Follow the instructions in the image below. The installation process can take up to a few minutes. It will depend on your Internet speed connection.
If everything goes right, you will see the following message at the top right of your screen: “Success Stack successfully deployed“.
Go back to STEP 1 or you will deal with karma 🙂
The installation process can take up to a few seconds/minutes. It will depend on your Internet speed connection. Now open your browser and type in http://Synology-ip-address:5992 Paste the video URL you want to download, and choose the format – MP4 for video and MP3 for audio. Select the quality then click the blue Add button to start the download. At the top right of the page you can also switch the theme to Dark mode. Follow the instructions in the image below.
