How to Install Pidgin on Your Synology NAS

Pidgin is a chat program which lets you log into accounts on multiple chat networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on XMPP and sitting in an IRC channel at the same time. In this step by step guide I will show you how to install Pidgin on your Synology NAS using Docker.

Install Container Manager via Synology ā€œPackage Centerā€. If you run an older DSM version (under 7.2), search for Docker instead of Container Manager.

  • STEP 3

Go toĀ File StationĀ and open the docker folder. Inside the docker folder, create one new folder and name itĀ pidgin. Follow the instructions in the image below.
Note: Be careful to enter only lowercase, not uppercase letters.

  • STEP 4

Go toĀ Control PanelĀ /Ā Task SchedulerĀ /Ā CreateĀ /Ā Scheduled TaskĀ /Ā User-defined script. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Once you click on User-defined script a new window will open. Follow the instructions below:

  1. General: In the Task field type in ā€œInstall Pidginā€œ. Uncheck ā€œEnabledā€ option. SelectĀ rootĀ User.
  2. Schedule: SelectĀ Run on the following dateĀ then select ā€œDo not repeatā€œ.
  3. Task Settings: Check ā€œSend run details by emailā€œ, add your email then copy paste the code below in the Run command area. After that clickĀ OK.

Note: Before you paste the code above in the Run command area, change the value numbers for PUIDĀ andĀ PGIDĀ with your own values. (Follow my step by step guide on how to do this.)

  • STEP 6

After you click OK on STEP 5 a new warning pop up window will open. Click OK.

After you click OK, type in your DSM Password then click Submit. Follow the instructions in the image below.

After you click Submit on STEP 6, select your ā€œInstall Pidginā€ Task then click the ā€œRunā€ tab. You will be asked to run Install Pidgin ā€“ click OK. Follow the instructions in the image below.

  • STEP 9

The installation process can take up to a few seconds/minutes. It will depend on your Internet speed connection. Now open your browser and type inĀ http://Synology-ip-address:3220 and select your favorite communication protocol.
