Nexterm is an open source server management software for SSH, VNC & RDP. It’s similar to Sshwifty and Shellngn. In this step by step guide I will show you how to install Nexterm on your Synology NAS using Docker and Portainer.

Install Portainer using my step by step guide. If you already have Portainer installed on your Synology NAS, skip this STEP. Attention: Make sure you have installed the latest Portainer version.
STEP 3
Go to File Station and open the docker folder. Inside the docker folder, create one new folder and name it nexterm. Follow the instructions in the image below.
Note: Be careful to enter only lowercase, not uppercase letters.
STEP 4
Log into Portainer using your username and password. On the left sidebar in Portainer, click on Stacks then + Add stack. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 5
In the Name field type in nexterm. Follow the instructions in the image below.

STEP 6
Scroll down on the page until you see a button named Deploy the stack. Click on it. Follow the instructions in the image below. The installation process can take up to a few minutes. It will depend on your Internet speed connection.

If everything goes right, you will see the following message at the top right of your screen: “Success Stack successfully deployed“.

Enable SSH service on port 22 then click Apply. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 9
Adjust your Synology NAS Firewall. Go to Control Panel / Security / Firewall Tab / Click Edit Rules. In your current Firewall rules, create a new rule for the Encrypted terminal app. Follow the instructions in the image below. ⚠️Remember: your Encrypted terminal rule should be ABOVE the latest deny rule. Move it from the last position to first position.
STEP 10
Go back to STEP 1 or you will deal with karma 🙂
STEP 11
The installation process can take up to a few seconds/minutes. It will depend on your Internet speed connection. Now open your browser and type in http://Synology-ip-address:6989 You will be prompted to create an administrator account. Type in your own details. Click Register. ⚠️Warning: Your password needs to be at least 8 characters long and contain at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number and one special character. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 12
On the left sidebar, click the server icon, then Right-click to Create Folder. Click Create Folder. Name your folder. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Once the folder is created, right click on the folder name, then Create Server. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 14
Click the Details tab, then type in your NAS Name and your local NAS IP. Go straight to the next STEP. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 15
Click the Identities tab. Type in your own NAS admin Username and Password. For the authentication method, select Password. Click Create. Follow the instructions in the image below.

You are now connected to your NAS via SSH!

If you decide to uninstall the Nexterm container, at STEP 9, remember to uncheck the Encrypted terminal app and remove the firewall rule for port 22.

Note: If you want to run the Nexterm container over HTTPS, check How to Run Docker Containers Over HTTPS. In order to make Nexterm work via HTTPS, it’s mandatory to activate WebSocket. After you have added your own Reverse proxy for DDNS like nexterm.yourname.synology.me you should add only your DDNS without nexterm on Server-IP area (screenshot below). Example: yourname.synology.me
nexterm.yourname.synology.me will be used only to connect to the Nexterm web interface. Then the yourname.synology.me address should be used as a Server-IP. (Screenshot below). Do NOT use https:// in front of your DDNS on the Server-IP area.
