Logitech Media Server is a streaming audio server supported by the LMS community and formerly supported by Logitech, developed in particular to support their Squeezebox range of digital audio receivers. In this step by step guide I will show you how to install Logitech Media Server on your Synology NAS using Docker & Portainer.

STEP 2
InstallĀ Portainer using my step by step guide. If you already have Portainer installed on your Synology NAS, skip this STEP. Attention: Make sure you have installed the latest Portainer version.
STEP 3
Go toĀ File Station and open the docker folder. Inside the docker folder, create one new folder and name it lms. Follow the instructions in the image below.
Note: Be careful to enter only lowercase, not uppercase letters.
STEP 4
Now create two new folders inside the lmsĀ folder that you created at STEP 3 and name them music and playlist. Follow the instructions in the image below.

STEP 5
Populate your music folder with your own music. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 6
Log into Portainer using your username and password. On the left sidebar in Portainer, click on StacksĀ thenĀ + Add stack. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 7
In the Name field type in lms. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Note: Before you paste the code above in the Web editor area below, change the value numbers for PUIDĀ andĀ PGIDĀ with your own values. (Follow my step by step guide on how to do this.)

STEP 8
Scroll down on the page until you see a button namedĀ Deploy the stack. Click on it. Follow the instructions in the image below. The installation process can take up to a few minutes. It will depend on your Internet speed connection.
STEP 9
If everything goes right, you will see the following message at the top right of your screen: āSuccess Stack successfully deployedā.

Go back toĀ STEP 1Ā or you will deal with karma š

The installation process can take up to a few seconds/minutes. It will depend on your Internet speed connection. Now open your browser and type inĀ http://Synology-ip-address:9002 If everything goes right, you will see the Logitech Media Server dashboard. Click on the Music Folder. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Your music that you have previously added at STEP 5 should appear in this area.
STEP 13
Logitech Media Server is a server and, to play music, you need a client that acts as player. To explain how to set up a new player on your Logitech Media Server, I will use Winamp as an external player that is installed on my Windows 11 PC. You can also use VLC or other players. Open Winamp, then right click on it. A new pop up window will open. Click Play, then URL. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 14
In the URL field, type in your local NAS IP followed by :9002/stream.mp3 Then click Open. Follow the instructions in the image below. 192.168.1.18 is my own local NAS IP. You should use your own local NAS IP.

STEP 15
Open your Logitech Media Server page. Choose Winamp as a player. Select your favorite songs, then click + to add them to the playlist. Start the playlist. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 16
Click Play on your Winamp media player and your music will be on air. Follow the instructions in the image below.
STEP 17
Thanks to Logitech Media Server, you can also stream Radio on air. Follow the instructions in the image below.

In order to make Logitech Media Server work via HTTPS, it’s mandatory to activate WebSocket. Remember: if you want to use the player to play music, you need to port forward ports 3483 (TCP/UDP), 9090 (TCP), 9002 (TCP) in your router pointing to your local NAS IP. It’s also mandatory to change the address at STEP 14 from http://yournasIP:9002/stream.mp3 to https://lms.yourname.synology.me/stream.mp3
