How to Install HOOBS on Your Synology NAS

HOOBS out of the box system, or HOOBS for short, is a plug and play hub that makes smart accessories compatible with your favorite ecosystem. Whether you prefer Apple Homekit, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa, you’re unlikely to find compatible accessories and services that all work together nicely under one roof. HOOBS aims to unify and simplify your smart home. It is designed to be accessible for beginners, yet robust and versatile for advanced users, opening a world of possibilities for automating your home. In this step by step guide I will show you how to install HOOBS on your Synology NAS using Docker. You can also use Homebridge for your smart home devices.

💡Note: This guide works perfectly with the latest HOOBS 4.1 release.

Install Container Manager via Synology “Package Center”. If you run an older DSM version (under 7.2), search for Docker instead of Container Manager.

Install Text Editor via Synology “Package Center”.

  • STEP 4

Go to File Station and open the docker folder. Inside the docker folder, create one new folder and name it hoobs. Follow the instructions in the image below.
Note: Be careful to enter only lowercase, not uppercase letters.

  • STEP 5

Go to Control Panel / Task Scheduler / Create / Scheduled Task / User-defined script. Follow the instructions in the image below.

  • STEP 6

Once you click on User-defined script a new window will open. Follow the instructions below:

  1. General: In the Task field type in “Install HOOBS“. Uncheck “Enabled” option. Select root User.
  2. Schedule: Select Run on the following date then select “Do not repeat“.
  3. Task Settings: Check “Send run details by email“, add your email then copy paste the code below in the Run command area. After that click OK.

Note: Before you paste the code in the Run command area, change the value numbers for PUID and PGID with your own values. (Follow my step by step guide on how to do this.)
Note: Before you paste the code in the Run command area, change the value for TZ (Select your current Time Zone from this list).

  • STEP 7

After you click OK on STEP 6 a new warning pop up window will open. Click OK.

After you click OK, type in your DSM Password then click Submit. Follow the instructions in the image below.

  • STEP 8

After you click Submit on STEP 7, select your “Install HOOBS” Task then click the “Run” tab. You will be asked to run Install HOOBS – click OK. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Note: The installation process can take up to a few seconds/minutes.

  • STEP 9

Go to File Station / Docker / hoobs / etc and open the config.json file by double clicking on it.

  • STEP 10

Change the standard port 80 to 8085 then save the file. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Go back to STEP 1 or you will deal with karma 🙂

  • STEP 12

Now open your browser and type in http://Synology-ip-address:8085/ Follow the instructions in the image below. Create an account, type in Name, Username, Password then Reenter Password. Click Create Account. Follow the instructions in the image below.
