How to Install ruTorrent on Your Synology NAS

ruTorrent is a PHP frontend/web interface to rTorrent (a console based BitTorrent client). It uses rTorrent’s built-in XML-RPC server to communicate with it. It is lightweight, highly extensible, and is designed to look similar to uTorrent. Everything you do using ruTorrent is communicated to and from rTorrent. In this step by step guide I will show you how to install ruTorrentĀ on your Synology NASĀ using Docker.

Install Container Manager via Synology ā€œPackage Centerā€. If you run an older DSM version (under 7.2), search for Docker instead of Container Manager.

  • STEP 3

Go toĀ File Station and open the docker folder. Inside the docker folder, create one new folder and name it rutorrent. Follow the instructions in the image below.
Note: Be careful to enter only lowercase, not uppercase letters.

Now create three new folders inside the rutorrentĀ folder that you created atĀ STEP 3 and name them data, downloads, password. Follow the instructions in the image below.

2 ruTorrent Synology NAS Set up

Go to Control Panel / Task Scheduler / Create / Scheduled Task / User-defined script. Follow the instructions in the images below.

Once you click on User-defined script a new window will open. Follow the instructions below:

  1. General: In the Task field type in Install ruTorrent. Uncheck ā€œEnabledā€ option. SelectĀ rootĀ User.
  2. Schedule: SelectĀ Run on the following dateĀ then select ā€œDo not repeatā€œ.
  3. Task Settings: Check ā€œSend run details by emailā€œ, add your email then copy paste the code below in the Run command area. After that clickĀ OK.

Note: Before you paste the code above in the Run command area below, change the value numbers for PUIDĀ andĀ PGIDĀ with your own values. (Follow my step by step guide on how to do this.)

After you click OK on STEP 6 a new warning pop up window will open. Click OK.

5 ruTorrent Synology NAS Set up

After you click OK, type in your DSM Password then click Submit. Follow the instructions in the image below.

After you click Submit on STEP 6, select your ā€œInstall ruTorrentā€ Task then click the ā€œRunā€ tab. You will be asked to run Install ruTorrent ā€“ click OK. Follow the instructions in the image below.

Fix: Make sure you have correctly port forwarded port 6881 UDP on your router pointing to your NAS.
