May 2026 has brought some major (and slightly shocking) news for the entire self-hosting community. Let’s kick things off with the biggest bombshell of the month: Plex has announced that the Lifetime Plex Pass license will jump to $749.99 starting July 1, 2026. Following the previous price increase, this latest hike effectively triples the cost and has sparked intense debate across the community. A lot of you are already wondering whether to grab it now at $249.99 until July 1, 2026 or switch straight to fully self-hosted alternatives like Jellyfin.
Bitwarden made headlines right away in mid-April 2026: the official website quietly removed the long-standing “Always free” wording from the personal plan page, and the company’s core GRIT values lost “Inclusion” and part of “Transparency,” which were replaced by “Innovation” and “Trust.” The community erupted (especially on Reddit), seeing the changes as a possible sign of enshittification. After the backlash, Bitwarden called the removal of “Always free” a marketing oversight and restored it though the updated company values remain in place. You can install Bitwarden on your Synology NAS by following my easy guide. In the meantime, the project continues to deliver solid updates (versions 2026.4.x), with significant improvements to Access Intelligence, vault health alerts, interface optimizations, and new organization features. It remains one of the most reliable and actively evolving self-hosted password manager solutions. Remember that you can also install Vaultwarden on your Synology NAS as the best free password solution for your NAS.
Additionally, WordPress has evolved to version 7.0, and mariushosting dot com has already upgraded the blog to WordPress 7.0, bringing improved speed, enhanced security, and a host of powerful new features under the hood.
Dockhand, on the other hand, is still riding high: it continues to enjoy massive success among Synology, UGREEN, and Asustor users. More and more people are choosing it as a modern, intuitive alternative to Portainer thanks to its regular updates, clean interface, and ease of use. The project is growing rapidly and the community loves it.
Unfortunately, despite all the effort I put in every month to keep mariushosting updated with detailed, real-world-tested guides that stay current with the latest versions, donations continue to be scarce. Only a small group of generous supporters has stepped up again this month. Running the blog requires time, servers, constant research, and frequent updates. ❤️Your support would truly make a difference in keeping the same level of passion and quality going forward. A huge thank you to those who are always there and make all of this possible. mariushosting remains your independent go-to resource for clear, practical, and up-to-date guides on NAS and self-hosting.
Tomorrow, May 25, 2026 is Memorial Day. We pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom. Their courage, service, and legacy will never be forgotten. May we carry their memory with gratitude and live each day worthy of the liberty they secured for us.
If you’re new here or simply want to get to know me a little better, feel free to drop by my personal blog.
Below you’ll find the most recent guides I updated in May 2026. See you in the next June update!
