Synology: Docker Engine EOL

Synology Docker Engine EOL

The Synology Container Manager package available in Package Center as well as the Docker package have one thing in common: an outdated Docker Engine, currently at version 20.10.23. As of December 11, 2023, this version has reached its END OF LIFE. This means that the version will no longer receive any security updates starting December 11, 2023.

You would think that Synology had done something about it, but no. History repeats itself again as it did with the MariaDB package and PHP which, thanks to the quick response of the Synology community and the campaign launched by mariushosting, Synology, with the speed of a running 🐌snail, has upgraded the package after 2 months and thousands of requests. The fact that two very important EOLs essentially escaped Synology’s sight in such short time shows that there is a problem with the internal management of upgrades of some packages.

🧨Docker Engine END OF LIFE

As mariushosting has become a reference point in the Synology community, I’m asking my visitors to send a Feature Inquiry to Synology asking them to upgrade the current Docker Engine from version 20.10.23 to the new 24.0.7 version. More and more “Feature Inquiry” sent to Synology will speed up the process with the update to the new Docker Engine 24.0.7 version.

🪄Send Feature Inquiry

As you can see in the image below, you have to choose Packages from Category, then Container Manager. After that, select your email, confirm it and select your current location. And then write your message and hit the send button.

Hello, Synology team!
I would like to let you know that the current Synology Container Manager that uses the Docker Engine 20.10.23 is at the end of life, according to https://endoflife.date/docker-engine and  https://mariushosting.com/synology-docker-engine-eol/ Updating to the 24.0.7 version is a must for every user that frequently uses Container Manager or the Docker package on their Synology NAS to manage their containers.

Sincerely,

Synology Docker Engine Feature Inquiry

Once you’ve clicked the Send button, you will see an automatic thank you message.

Note: Synology is a wonderful company with a very hard-working team that has always shown a great deal of determination when it comes to solving issues such as this. The thing is, they can’t stay on top of everything and need people like us to help them do just that by sending in suggestions such as this Feature Inquiry about the Docker Engine. The more of us there are that send this Feature Inquiry, the higher the chances that the new Docker Engine 24.0.7 version will be released this winter, and we will all benefit from it. Unity is strength so let’s unite and do this!
Note: Docker Engine is a containerization technology that allows applications to be packaged independently, avoiding the requirement to install or manage software dependencies. Containers are isolated from one another and bundle their own software, libraries and configuration files.
