Close to a year ago, on December 11, 2023, I was here, down with you in the trenches, writing a Feature Inquiry to Synology petitioning for the umpteenth time for an update to the Docker Engine to be pushed forward. Specifically, we were requesting that the Docker Engine be upgraded from version 20.10+ to version 24.0+. The investment of the community in requesting this update had been massive which lead to a positive response from Synology about the matter at the time. This, naturally, settled our concerns. But here we are, today, almost a year later, and the Docker Engine version we rely on as Synology users has reached its EOL.
If you remember, at the time, Synology responded to feature inquiries positively. The requests to update the Docker Engine version on Synology that came from all over the world were almost immediately met with the reassurance that the new Docker Engine 24.0+ would be rolling out with urgency. After about approximately 6 months had passed, on May 28, 2024, Synology launched the beta version of their Container Manager supporting Docker Engine 24.0.2. Meanwhile, on June 8, 2024, Docker Engine 24.0 entered its EOL. So 11 days after Synology released Docker Engine 24.0.2 in BETA, this same version reached EOL. Today, August 29, 2024, just days after the release of the new DSM 7.2.2 update, we’re somehow finding ourselves in the exact same spot as we were on December 11, 2023 – which is, missing vital updates – and it feels UNREAL.
Both the Synology Container Manager package available in Package Center and the Docker package have one thing in common at the moment: an outdated Docker Engine, sitting at version 24.0.2, and currently in BETA.Ā As of June 8, 2024, this version of Docker Engine has reached its END OF LIFE. What this means it that it has no longer been receiving any security updates since June 8, 2024.
We last got our update of Docker Engine after about 6 months of waiting and following thousands and thousands of Feature Inquiry requests. It was not prompt š, but it was nonetheless carried out. However, the fact that, once again, a significant security milestone has been neglected, one that has the potential to impact users across the board, can only mean there is a bigger underlying issue at management level when it comes to updates to vital packages being carried out in a timely manner.
This being said, we once again find ourselves in a situation that requires us to take immediate action. So I’mĀ once again calling out to the Synology community. We need to campaign for us and push the release of a new Docker Engine version! It’s time for us to launch a new FEATURE INQUIRY!
As mariushosting has become a reference point with a wide reach in the Synology community, I’m calling on everybody to send in a FEATURE INQUIRY! I’m asking my visitors to petition Synology to upgrade the current Docker Engine from version 24.0.2Ā to the new 27.4.1Ā version. The more requests we send in, the more we can speed up the process to update Docker Engine to its latest version.
As you can see in the image below, to send a Feature Inquiry, you have to choose Packages from Category, then Container Manager. After that, select your email, confirm it and select your current location. And then write your message and hit the send button.
Hello, Synology team!
I would like to let you know that the current Synology Container Manager BETA in DSM 7.2.2 uses the Docker Engine 24.0.2 version which has reached its end of life, according to https://endoflife.date/docker-engine andĀ https://mariushosting.com/synology-docker-engine-24-0-eol Updating to the 27.4.1 version is a must for every person who frequently uses Container Manager or the Docker package on their Synology NAS to manage their containers.Sincerely,
Once you’ve clicked the Send button, you will see an automatic thank you message.
Note: Synology is a wonderful company with a very hard-working team that has always shown a great deal of determination when it comes to solving issues such as this. The reality is they can’t stay on top of everything and need people like us to help them do just that by sending in suggestions such as this Feature Inquiry about the Docker Engine. The more of us there are that send this Feature Inquiry, the higher the chances that the new Docker Engine 27.4.1 version will be released when Container Manager will be out of beta, and we will all benefit from it. Unity is strength so let’s unite and do this!
Note: Docker Engine is a containerization technology that allows applications to be packaged independently, avoiding the requirement to install or manage software dependencies. Containers are isolated from one another and bundle their own software, libraries and configuration files.
