Synology: DS925+ Release Date and Specs

Synology DS925+ Release Date and Specs

A new product joins the ranks of Synology and of course mariushosting couldn’t pass on the opportunity to let you know about it. The DS925+ comes with an old AMD Ryzen V1500B that was released in 2018. The CPU has a 4-core 2.2 GHz base frequency – there is NO turbo boost. The default installed memory is only 4GB, DDR4 ECC SODIMM and it’s expandable up to 32GB. There is support for M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs, but only with PCIe 3.0 – M.2 slots on the DS925+ are limited to PCIe 3.0, NOT PCIe 4.0. This means it can handle NVMe M.2 2280 SSDs designed for PCIe 3.0, and while PCIe 4.0 SSDs may work in backward compatibility mode, they will operate at PCIe 3.0 speeds (up to ~3,900 MB/s theoretical maximum). PCIe 3.0 was released in November 2010, making it about 14.5 years old as of April 2025. There is NO option to install a 10GbE module in the back like was the case for the DS923+.

If you want to move your current non-Synology disks from, for example, the DS723+ or DS923+ into the DS925+, you will not be stressed with disk incompatibility messages and everything will work smoothly. However, if you decide to put in new disks that are not from an older NAS, you will be asked to buy Synology disks because disks from other brands are not supported.

Synology’s increasing vendor lock-in, such as requiring branded hard drives or NVMe SSDs for full feature support (e.g., health monitoring or deduplication), alienates users who want flexibility. The new DS925+ model restricts features to Synology-branded drives, which are rebadged Toshiba or Seagate drives at a premium. This, combined with limited RAM upgrade options and proprietary NICs, makes Synology hardware feel restrictive.

From your Internet friend Marius’ perspective, the DS925+ hardware doesn’t match DSM 7.2 software quality. Synology may ship this NAS for targeted reviews on many blogs or YouTube channels, but if anyone recommends it, be vigilant because I do not recommend this model based on its restrictive/obsolete hardware. Fortunately, Synology will present new and better models at COMPUTEX Taipei starting May 20, 2025.

Note: How much does the Synology DS925+ cost? The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the new DS925+ is $620 or 630 EUR.
Note: When will the Synology DS925+ become available? According to the official press release, Synology DS925+ is now available through Synology’s solution partners and channel networks.
Note: What does DS stand for? DS means DiskStation.
Note: What it is I wish would be implemented on future DiskStation? PCIe 4 Expansion instead of PCIe 3 for M.2 2280 SSDs. PCIe 3 is already considered outdated.
Note: M.2 2280 NVME SSDs can be used with DSM 7.2 as storage to create storage pools only with a few other models.
Note: Can I run Docker on DS925+? The DS925+ is 100% suitable for Docker.
