Docker Engine is an open source containerization technology for building and containerizing your applications. Docker Engine acts as a client-server application with: a server with a long-running daemon process dockerd, APIs which specify interfaces that programs can use to talk to and instruct the Docker daemon.
Why is it important for NAS manufacturers to have the Docker engine upgraded? Many people use Docker on their NAS because of the simplicity of being able to back up and use thousands of open source programs directly on the NAS with minimal knowledge. For example, the Portainer 2.21.0 container released on August 28, 2024 is built to support Docker Engine 26 and above. Although it works with lower versions, these can interfere with its optimal operation.
Some Docker containers will simply not work with an outdated Docker Engine. So, do not expect all Docker containers to work or to continue to work if the Docker Engine is outdated. Because of this, I recently launched a call-to-action campaign to have Synology urgently upgrade their Docker Engine to the latest version. You can fill an Inquiry as well. I have also personally contacted TerraMaster about their Docker Engine and the response has been positive which means we will have an upgraded version of Docker Engine on their TOS operating system soon. QNAP, ASUSTOR and UGREEN seem to be on the right track already and there is a clear desire to stay ahead of the curve.
Note: I will personally update the list above from time to time to keep an eye on the Docker Engine updates on various NAS models from different vendors. I am making a huge effort by continually reporting issues like this to the NAS vendors. Don’t forget to support mariushosting for the continued contribution to the community of NAS owners.
