Both models feature a single 120mm fan on the rear, but the Gen 3âs fan works with a more efficient internal heat pipe system. Port Layout and Connectivity:
Gen 3: Upgrades to dual 10GbE and dual 5GbE LAN ports, dual USB 4.0 ports (40Gbps, Thunderbolt-compatible), a reset button, a power port, and a PCIe expansion slot. Notably, the HDMI port is removed due to the AMD Ryzen lacking integrated graphics. The increased network bandwidth (up to 30GbE potential) and USB 4.0 connectivity reflect higher performance demands, indirectly tying to heat management as these components can contribute to system heat under load.
Gen 2: Included two 2.5GbE LAN ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, an HDMI 2.0 port, a reset button, a power port, and a PCIe expansion slot (for a 10GbE card or SSD). The HDMI port was tied to the Intel CPUâs integrated graphics, which aided heat dissipation by offloading some processing tasks.

Tightening The Screws
I placed my 4 HDDs in the disk bays, tightened the screws to fix them in and prepared for the next STEP. 4 HDD disks inserted into the NAS. The process was quick and easy.
How to Access the M2 Slots
Using a screwdriver, remove the 3 screws at the back of the device, then remove the metal case. Follow the instructions in the photo below.
Four M.2 Slots
The LOCKERSTOR 4 Gen3 NAS series comes with four M.2 slots for caching or storage or both. Either use all the slots for one purpose or mix and match, depending on your needs.
RAM Upgrade
The LOCKERSTOR 4 Gen3 NAS is paired with 16 GB of server-grade ECC DDR5 RAM (expandable to 64 GB).
Connecting the NAS
Plug the LAN cables into your Router/Switch and connect to the power grid. Click the Power on button at the front of the NAS. On your PC, install the ASUSTOR Control Center software from the official ASUSTOR website. Once the ASUSTOR Control Center software is installed, hit the Scan button. Your NAS will then be found on your network. Select it, then click Connect to connect to it.
Your ADM 5 OS at a Glance!
Once you have set up your Disks and Volume, you can start to personalize your ADM operating system. Remember to use the following credentials when connecting to your operating system for the first time: admin for the username and admin for the password. Afterwards, you will absolutely need to create a new user with admin privileges to use from that point on. To do this, click the Access Control icon. Then, after creating your new administrator, disable the default admin user.
